Want to write open source code? Want to make money? Want to do both? In 2007 alone, Google Summer of Code brought together 900 students and nearly 1500 mentors across 90 countries to contribute to over 130 different open source software projects. We¹re looking for mentors and students to join us in making 2008 the best Summer of Code yet! We¹ll be offering successful student contributors a 4500 USD stipend, enabling them to focus on their coding projects for three months. Google will accept student applications from 24 - 31 March. We are pleased to announce that GenMAPP is planning to participate again this year as one of the mentoring organizations. We will be serving as an umbrella organization for Cytoscape, GenMAPP-CS, and WikiPathways projects. These projects are at the intersection of Biology and Computer Science, enabling discovery through visualization and analysis of biological data in the context of pathways and networks. Job Title: Postdoctoral positions in computational biology/bioinformatics of cellular networks Required Skills: Strong background in molecular biology or biochemistry, bioinformatics, statistics, computer programming. Job Description: Post-doctoral positions are immediately available in the group of Dr. Gary Bader at the University of Toronto (http://baderlab.org) to study the organization and evolution of biological systems using computational biology and bioinformatics techniques. We seek to accurately predict links, such as specific molecular interactions, in eukaryotic cell signaling systems using comprehensive genomics data. We are interested to find how these links are rewired by mutations to cause disease. This work is supported through the development of open-source biological pathway and network databases and visualization and analysis software. Bioinformatics Software Developers
Are you interested in biology and computer science? We are looking for a motivated individual to work on open-source biological pathway and network databases and visualization and analysis software. This is a good opportunity to learn about the emerging field of bioinformatics and to contribute to important research projects and the development of software applications that are currently in use by an international community of scientists. Working in a small bioinformatics team, the incumbent will provide software development and data management services for the GeneMANIA gene function prediction system targeted at biologist and computational biologist users. Candidates will be responsible for requirements gathering, design, implementation, operation and maintenance of data structures, graphical user interfaces, database driven websites, algorithms, reporting and technical documentation. Candidates must be well versed (at least 2 years experience) in programming in Java using open-source programming libraries and databases including database driven websites, and graphical user interface (GUI) design in Java Swing, and other modern technologies. Good communication skills, the ability to work effectively in a team, thorough understanding of good software engineering practices, software architecture and experience with group software development are essential. Biology background or interest desirable. Multiple positions are available. Project Manager, Training and Outreach Coordinator
Are you a biologist turned manager interested in computational biology? We are looking for a motivated and highly organized individual to help manage a bioinformatics and genomics software development project and coordinate community outreach and training. Helping to lead a small bioinformatics team, the incumbent will provide project management, community outreach and training for the GeneMANIA gene function prediction system targeted at biologist and computational biologist users. The candidate will be responsible for project management (recruiting; reporting; prioritizing software features; user testing of software; organizing and chairing meetings), training (creating education material; organizing online and in-person tutorials and workshops), and community outreach (presenting at conferences; identifying and reaching out to scientist users; soliciting, responding to and tracking user feedback, advertising the project by writing website content, tracking usage statistics, working with relevant organizations like biological standards organizations and model organism database groups) to coordinate development). The GeneMANIA research project is situated in the newly built Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, a major international centre of excellence in genomics, proteomics and systems biology research, in the heart of the exciting cosmopolitan city of Toronto.
